Worcester Talking Newspapers For The Blind

11 Colin Chance House, Wylds Lane, Worcester, WR5 1DA

READING a newspaper is something most people take for granted, but for vision-impaired people it can become nothing more than a distant memory. But thanks to a Worcester charity, more than 300 blind and partially-sighted people are able to listen to the week’s round-up of news on cassette players.

The Worcester Talking Newspaper was founded in 1976 by Colin and Beryl Chance.

The charity, based in Wyld’s Lane, is supported by dozens of volunteers and relies solely on their fund-raising efforts, and donations, for its survival.

The Talking Newspaper is prepared once a week, on Thursday night, with teams of readers reading out selected stories from the week’s editions of the Evening News.

The charity also has a library of more than 300 “talking” books, which have been recorded onto tapes by Jacki Ager and her team of readers.
