Organ of Corti

Organ of Corti by liminal, winner of PRS for Music Foundation’s New Music Award 2010, allows you to become both composer and audience as you step inside and move around this pioneering, experimental instrument. Inspiring you to explore new ways of listening by re-engaging with the sonic world around you, the Organ of Corti compels you to ask, "What defines a piece of music?"

Organ of Corti is a four metre high, visually transparent sonic crystal that takes sounds from the environment in which it is placed and recycles them, without adding any noise of its own. As you listen to sounds of road traffic or a weir filtered by the sonic crystal, you can hear musical structures in what many would consider to be merely day-to-day noise of the environments in which we live.

This summer, the Organ of Corti will tour England, to be installed and open to the public at four iconic sites. Its unique structure will be altered in response to the different sounds found at each of the four locations:

July 1-7: City of London Festival; Carter Lane Gardens, St Paul’s Cathedral

July 9-11: Lake District Summer Music Festival; Lay-by on A685 overlooking M6,Tebay Gorge

Aug 15-17: Cotswold Water Park; Lake 6, near A419

Aug 19-21: Worcester Music Festival; Diglis Weir, River Severn.

PediTours operating times of free pedicab rides during Organ of Corti visit.

Pedi Tours  will be operating a free service along both banks of the river between the old river bridge at Bridge Street/New Road and the new Diglis Bridge from 9:30am to 5:30pm on the 19th, 20th and 21st August 2011.

Anyone wishing to make use of the free pedicab service during those three days can always phone Marcus Sparrow  on 07415 121 414 when they arrive at the riverside so that he knows where and when to pick up.

The PediTours pedicab is licensed to carry up to three passengers per journey.

Taking its name from the organ of hearing in the inner ear, the Organ of Corti explores the wider implications of recent developments in our understanding of acoustics and the neuroscience of hearing (how we listen) on health, music and culture, including our attitudes to sound in architecture, planning and our environment.

Organ of Corti has been made possible through the generosity of funders PRS for Music Foundation and Arts Council England, and is hosted by the City of London Festival, Lake District Summer Music Festival, Cotswold Water Park Trust and Worcester Music Festival. It has been developed in partnership with the Acoustics Research Group at the Open University, Vistaprojects and Sustrans, with support from City of London Pollution Team, Mark Leahy, OMK Design Consultancy and Tandem. Sponsorship from Westmorland Ltd. Westmorland Hotel & Tebay Services, and Dartington Arts.
